On the basis of abundant field surveys, this book gives a full account of the phonetics of the local dialect in southern Yongzhou City of Hunan Province, revealing many of its significant phonetic features, such as the evolutionary history of completely voiced initials, the phenomena of the initials of “帮bang” and “端duan” being pronounced as nasal lateral and affricate and the initials of words like “知 zhi” being pronounced as obstruent, the phenomena of different categorization of “鱼yu” and “虞yu” , “东dong” and “钟zhong”, and the categorization of initials according to strong or weak airflows, etc, so as to help people gain a clearer understanding of the phonetics of the dialect in question. Meanwhile, the author adopts a geographical linguistic method to sub-categorize the dialect in southern Yongzhou and compares its phonetics with those of the south Hunan dialect, north Guangdong dialect and the Ping dialect in north Guangxi, further revealing the relationships among the subcategories within the local dialect of Yongzhou and its relationships with the neighboring dialects, thus is able to further people’s understanding of the nature of the local dialect and enhance the studies on the local dialect and the dialects surrounding it.
